Fort San Juan

In 2017 the Exploring Joara Foundation will celebrate the 450th anniversary of the founding of Fort San Juan. Spanish army captain Juan Pardo & 125 undertook a mission to forge a route to the Spanish silver mines in northern Mexico. During this expedition he built 6 forts between SC & TN. Among them was Fort San Juan located near the native village of Joara, near Morganton.
